Make it with Clay

Come learn the in’s and out’s of a pottery studio or earn your badge requirements at a real working pottery studio.  We have a community of working ceramic artists and all the resources to create, learn, and finish your work.

We can tailor a program to meet your needs in one session or two.  Just let us know!

We'll begin with a fascinating discussion of clay - how it was formed and it's unique characteristics and historical uses.

We'll take a tour and discuss how moist clay is stored, clay is reclaimed, how wedging improves the clay, and how work in progress is stored to retain moisture.  Stages such as leather hard, bone dry, and bisque will be discussed, as will joining methods with clay glue.

We can show you the insides of the kilns, discuss how they work, and probably see one in action.  We love to discuss the differences between firing in our gas kiln, our electric kilns, or why raku is so magical.

We'll describe what glazes are made from, and what happens to them in the kiln.  Then we'll demonstrate or discuss most of the major glazing techniques: dipping, pouring, spraying, painting and sponging.

Methods of clay construction which can be discussed and created are:

*Field trips typically last 1 - 1 ½ hours per session, depending upon ages and what you would like to get out of the studio visit.   Students can either create a wet clay project (7-10 day turn around time) or paint a “paint your own pottery” piece (3-7 day turn around time)

        Fused Glass

Depending upon the age and interest of your group, we will talk about different types of class, melting temperatures and what occurs in the kiln.  The differences of glass fusing and slumping will be discussed.  “Kid friendly” glass is available for younger groups while older groups will learn about cutting glass.
